When it comes to leg exercises, the front squat is the best I have ever tried. I started noticing results very soon after I started them. When I first became interested in squatting, I was committed to the bar behind the neck method. Later, I learned about the front squat--in which the bar rests on the front of the shoulders. After getting used to it, front squatting has become my favorite exercise "EVER".
As you may have already discovered, the squat is at the top of the heap (along with dead-lifts). This is one of the most effective exercises and stimulates muscle gain and even fat loss. The front squat is a full body exercise that engages a large number of muscles in the body, and is also classified as the ultimate butt exercise because it stimulates more muscle activation and hormonial response (i.e. weight loss, fat loss, muscle definition and firming of the butt muscle)
If one is opposed to letting the bar rest on the front or the shoulder, squats can be done with any free weighted objects such as dumbbells, kettlebells, sandbags, or even just body weight. I don't encourage using the Smith Machine or any other squatting machine for that matter. Free weights are best when squatting. The need to balance the bar or dumbbells helps greatly, and a machine wont allow your body to follow natural, biomechanically-correct movement paths. The front squat is the king of full body muscle workout.
If I miss any exercises during the week, I still run and do front squats every single day (No Matter What)
